Life Insurance for Metaxalone (Skelaxin) Users. Everything You Need to Know at a Glance!

In this article, we wanted to take a moment and try and answer some of the most common questions we get from folks applying for life insurance after they have been prescribed Metaxalone or one of the common brand names it is sold under, including Metaxall and Skelaxin to help relax certain muscles or to help treat mild pain commonly associated with suffering from an injury or sprain.

Questions that will be directly addressed will include:

  • Can I qualify for life insurance after I’ve been prescribed Metaxalone?
  • Why do life insurance companies care if I’ve been prescribed Metaxalone?
  • What kind of information will the insurance companies ask me or be interested in?
  • What rate (or price) can I qualify for?
  • What can I do to help ensure that I get the “best life insurance” for me?

So, without further ado, let’ dive right in!

Can I qualify for life insurance after I’ve been prescribed Metaxalone?

Yes, individuals can and often will be able to qualify for a traditional term or whole life insurance policy after having been prescribed Metaxalone.  In fact, some may even be able to qualify for a Preferred Plus rate!

Why do life insurance companies care if I’ve been prescribed Metaxalone?

There are basically two reasons why a life insurance company is likely to “care” if you’ve been prescribed Metaxalone.  The first reason is that it is a muscle relaxer that is used to help folks after suffering from a muscle strain or injury, so it only makes sense that a life insurance company would want to know about a recent injury that occurred, particularly if you are still using your Metaxalone at the time of your life insurance application.

The second reason…

Why life insurance companies tend to be interested in the fact that you have been prescribed Metaxalone specifically because it is a muscle relaxer. The good news on this front is that Metaxalone is not a prescription medication that is prone to cause abuse. However, insurance underwriters are trained to be on the lookout for any sign of potential risk, so this may be something they decide to look at.

And by…

Look at what we mean is that in addition to the normal questions a life insurance company is going to ask about drugs and alcohol, in cases like these, they may also be on the look out for multiple prescriptions from multiple doctors or other indications that something might not be right.

What kind of information will the insurance companies ask me or be interested in?

  • When were you first prescribed Metaxalone?
  • Who prescribed your Metaxalone? A general practitioner or a specialist?
  • Why have you been prescribed Metaxalone?
  • Are you still taking your Metaxalone?
  • Are you taking any other prescription medications?
  • Has your doctor recommended or suggested any other therapeutic techniques or surgical procedures to help you treat your condition?
  • How did you suffer from your injury?
  • Do you have any history of drug or alcohol abuse?
  • Do you have any issues with your driving record? Issues such as multiple moving violations, a DUI, or a suspended license?
  • Are you currently working now?
  • In the past 12 months, have you applied for or received any form of disability benefits?

What rate (or price) can I qualify for?

Listed above are just a few of the many factors that will come into play when trying to determine what kind of “rate” an individual might be able to qualify for.  This is why it’s pretty much impossible to know what kind of “rate” you might be able to qualify for without at least speaking with you for a few minutes.

That said, however…

There are a few “assumptions” that we can make by assuming that your Metaxalone prescription is just being used to treat a minor muscle strain or injury, and there aren’t any signs of dependency or addiction.  In cases like these, what we’ve commonly found is that most of the time, a previous Metaxalone prescription WON’T play a role in the outcome of one’s life insurance application.

Or, in other words…

The “rate” that you would have been able to qualify for PRIOR to being prescribed Metaxalone should be the same “rate” that you would be able to qualify for AFTER having been prescribed Metaxalone, which is a good thing!

Where we…

Might run into issues when the underlying injury warranting your Metaxalone appears that it might be more serious than originally thought or is still being currently treated, because in cases like these, it’s possible that a life insurance underwriter may want to seek out additional information from your primary care physician before moving forward with your life insurance application or may want to postpone your life insurance application until you no longer need to receive treatment.

The good news is…

That here at IBUSA, we have a ton of experience helping folks with all sorts of pre-existing medical conditions, so at the end of the day, it’s not going to really matter all that much to us how serious our underlying injury is, because we’ve probably dealt with something worse!  This brings us to the last topic that we wanted to take a moment and discuss with you, which is…
