Life Insurance for Avodart users.
In this article, we wanted to take a moment and answer some of the most common questions we get from folks applying for life insurance after they have been prescribed Avodart or its generic form Dutasteride to treat those who have been prescribed with benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate).
Questions that will be directly addressed will include:
- Can I qualify for life insurance after I’ve been prescribed Avodart?
- Why do life insurance companies care if I’ve been prescribed Avodart?
- What kind of information will the insurance companies ask me or be interested in?
- What rate (or price) can I qualify for?
- What can I do to help ensure that I get the “best life insurance” for me?
So, without further ado, let’s dive right in!
Can I qualify for life insurance after I’ve been prescribed Avodart?
Yes, individuals who have been prescribed Avodart in the past can and often will be able to qualify for a traditional term or whole life insurance policy. In fact, having been prescribed Avodart in the past shouldn’t really affect one’s life insurance application at all once an insurance underwriter can determine that your enlarged prostate is not being caused by prostate cancer.
Why do life insurance companies care if I’ve been prescribed Avodart?
Life insurance companies don’t really “care” if an individual has been prescribed Avodart per say, it’s just going to make them want to ask a few questions about “why” you’ve been prescribed Avodart.
As well as…
Make them want to rule out the possibility that there may be an “alternative” reason why you are suffering from an enlarged prostate other than simply having benign prostatic hypertrophy.
At this point…
It’s important to remember that these folks (life insurance underwriters) are paid to “worry” so if they do decide to ask you a ton of questions about your benign prostatic hyperplasia, don’t let it freak you out, this is completely normal, and once they determine that you do only have an enlarged prostate, you’ll be fine.
What kind of information will the insurance companies ask me or be interested in?
- When were you first prescribed Avodart?
- Who prescribed it to you? A general practitioner or an oncologist?
- What symptoms led you to believe that you may be suffering from an enlarged prostate?
- Have you had a Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test performed? What was the score?
- Have you ever been diagnosed with cancer?
What rate (or price) can I qualify for?
Once it has been determined that you’re only using your Avodart to treat a benign enlarged prostate, in theory, you should qualify for any “rate” offered by an insurance company. Or in other words, you should still be able to qualify for a Preferred or Preferred Plus rate.
Now…
We say “in theory” because it’s important to remember that while it’s true that a benign enlarged prostate isn’t going to have any kind of an effect on the outcome of your life insurance application, that doesn’t mean that there isn’t a long list of other factors that might!
You see…
When a life insurance company is trying to determine who the will and won’t insure, there are a wide variety of factors that can and often will come into play. Some of these factors will center around an applicant’s health, but many others won’t! For example, here is just a small list of things a typical life insurance company will consider before deciding what kind of “rate” one can qualify for.
Common “non-health” factors that will often be considered may include your:
- Immediate family’s medical history,
- Driving record,
- Previous felony or misdemeanor convictions,
- Future travel destinations,
- Previous bankruptcies,
- Hobbies,
- Employment choices,
- Etc…
This is why it’s important that an individual fully understands all of the factors that may come into play when determining what kind of “rate” they may be able to qualify for and not get too “hung” upon one issue.
This brings us to the last topic that we wanted to take a moment and discuss, which is…
