Life Insurance for Pepcid (Famotidine) Users. Everything You Need to Know at a Glance!

In this article, we wanted to take a moment and try and answer some of the most common questions we get from folks applying for life insurance after they have been prescribed Pepcid or its generic form Famotidine to help treat a variety of different medical conditions, including:

As well as several pre-existing medical conditions which are known to cause excessive stomach acid production.

Questions that will be directly addressed will include:

  • Can I qualify for life insurance after I’ve been prescribed Pepcid?
  • Why do life insurance companies care if I’ve been prescribed Pepcid?
  • What kind of information will the insurance companies ask me or be interested in?
  • What rate (or price) can I qualify for?
  • What can I do to help ensure that I get the “best life insurance” for me?

So, without further ado, let’ dive right in!

Can I qualify for life insurance after I’ve been prescribed Pepcid?

Yes, individuals who have been prescribed Pepcid can and often will be able to qualify for a traditional term or whole life insurance policy.  In fact, they may even be able to qualify for a Preferred rate!  The problem is that because Pepcid is used to treat such a wide range of pre-existing medical conditions ranging in severity, most (if not all) life insurance companies are going to need to know more about “why” you’ve been prescribed Pepcid and how “serious” your pre-existing condition is prior to making any kind of decisions about your life insurance application.

Why do life insurance companies care if I’ve been prescribed Pepcid?

Life insurance companies “care” if you’ve been prescribed Pepcid because it gives them a clue as to what additional questions they should ask during the underwriting process so that they can get a full and accurate summary of your health.

This is particularly true…

In cases where one may be at an increased risk of suffering from infections resulting from severe ulcers and or cases where one’s chronic GERD has led to the development of more “serious” complications, including but not limited to the diagnoses of Barrett’s Esophagus. This is why, in most cases, once a life insurance underwriter becomes aware that you have been prescribed Pepcid, they’ll usually begin asking some additional questions about your prescription and how it is treating your underlying pre-existing medical condition.

What kind of information will the insurance companies ask me or be interested in?

Common questions you’ll likely be asked may include:

  • When were you first prescribed Pepcid?
  • Who prescribed your Pepcid? A general practitioner or a specialist?
  • Why were you originally prescribed Pepcid?
  • Have you been diagnosed with:
    • Ulcers?
      • If so, what kind?
      • What symptoms led you to discover you have ulcers?
      • Are you still experiencing any symptoms from your ulcers?
      • Have you ever been hospitalized due to your ulcers?
      • Have you undergone any surgeries, or has any doctor recommended that you should have any surgeries to treat your ulcers?
    • Gastroesophageal Reflux Disorder?
      • If so, how “severe” is your condition?
      • Have you also been diagnosed with Barrett’s Esophagus?
    • Or some other pre-existing medical condition?
  • Is Pepcid the only prescription medication that you’re currently taking?
  • Have any of your prescription medications changed in any way over the past 12 months?
  • Are you currently working now?
  • In the past 12 months, have you applied for or received any form of disability benefits?

What rate (or price) can I qualify for?

What you’re generally going to find is that for most pre-existing medical conditions that might warrant the use of Pepcid, most life insurance companies will still consider an applicant “potentially” eligible for a Preferred rating at first because most of the “possible” conditions could be being treated aren’t necessarily “life-threatening”.

“Which is a good thing!”

The problem is…

While most of the pre-existing medical conditions that Pepcid can treat aren’t “life-threatening,” they also seem to leave themselves open to a bit of “subjectivity.”  This means that while it’s possible that a potential applicant might not consider their situation too “severe,” an insurance underwriter might disagree.

What we find to be the case more often is that one life insurance underwriter might totally disagree with what another life insurance underwriter might think about when deciding what kind of “rate” an individual might be able to qualify for.  This is why, without knowing the specifics of an individual situation, it’s pretty much impossible to guess what one might be able to qualify for aside from simply stating that those “deemed” with a mild case of ulcers or GERD will probably be able to qualify for a Standard or better rate. In contrast, those suffering from a more “severe” case of either might only be able to qualify for a “high risk” rating, if even that!

This brings us to the last topic that we wanted to take a moment and discuss with you in this article, which is…
